The weather was constantly changing as always, and we found ourselves in very strong winds soon after leaving our morning landing position. Julio took one look at the wind speeds and the conditions outside and made the call to change our planned landing at Penguin Island. We made our way to Admiralty Bay where we planned to go visit a working Polish station that is opened all year, Arctowski Station. The 16 staff who wintered over invited us to tour their facilities and the surrounding penguin rookeries. We were planning on a visit before dinner, but due to John’s and Scobie’s unannounced swim, we decided to move the visit for after dinner. The hotel staff went into overdrive and quickly moved our dinner plans forward in order to give us as much time at the
station before darkness set in. The winds were picking up again as we pulled into the station and headed over to the rocky shorelines to check out the area. The winds kept increasing and it was obvious we would have to head back to the ship before it became to rough to get back. The drivers were classic as they ran back and fourth through the high winds taking us back to the safety of our ship. It was a nice feeling to get into our warm cabins and look out to the raging seas. We started north again to our last destination of the trip, Elephant island, the home of Shackleton’s men for 41/2 months in 1916.
